This set of Sound-to-Word Bridge Cards is for Grade R to 3 learners who know their letter sounds but need support turning them into simple words. The set focuses on the process of building words from sounds rather than just word lists and contains cards that combine vowels and consonants step by step. Each card includes short, controlled sentences and simple words to support reading fluency and confidence.
The reading cards:
- Provide practice with CV sound chunks such as ba, be, bi, bo, bu.
- Demonstrate how a final consonant is added to form a complete word.
- Include lists of simple CVC words.
- Contain short sentences to strengthen children’s understanding and automatic decoding.
- Focus on relevant consonants; the letters Q and X are excluded.
- For extra practice, a reading card for each vowel is also included.
How it works:
- Bind or place in a flip file.
- Start with vowels, then move to consonants.
- Practice for a few minutes daily.
Why parents and teachers use it:
- Targeted for the transition phase: Bridges the gap between sound recognition and full words — suitable for children who know the letter sounds but struggle to read words.
- Step-by-step sound building: Learners automatically recognise CV sound chunks before the final consonant is added — a key step for fluent, accurate reading.
- Controlled repetition: Repetition supports fluency and builds confidence.
